While all states benefitted from the Affordable Care Act, the states that also accepted Medicaid Expansion saw much greater gains in those insured than did South Carolina.<br \/>(<a href=\"https:\/\/crr.bc.edu\/40-states-expanded-medicaid-the-benefits-are-piling-up\/\">Center for Retirement Research<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=&#8221;1_2,1_2&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.16&#8243; background_size=&#8221;initial&#8221; background_position=&#8221;top_left&#8221; background_repeat=&#8221;repeat&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;1_2&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.16&#8243; custom_padding=&#8221;|||&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; custom_padding__hover=&#8221;|||&#8221;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.24.0&#8243; background_size=&#8221;initial&#8221; background_position=&#8221;top_left&#8221; background_repeat=&#8221;repeat&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h3>What would Medicaid Expansion do<br \/>for South Carolina?<\/h3>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.24.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; text_font_size=&#8221;16px&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Many studies prove out that Medicaid, and its expansion, is indeed a good investment \u2014 not just for health outcomes \u2014 but for state economies and budgets as well.<br \/>(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthinsurance.org\/medicaid\/south-carolina\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">HealthInsurance.org<\/a>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>345,000 South Carolinians would be covered by this expansion<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>105,000 of these, the poorest of our residents, currently fall in the &#8220;coverage gap&#8221; and have no realistic access to health insurance at all. They would have access to true healthcare. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthinsurance.org\/medicaid\/south-carolina\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">HealthInsurance.org<\/a>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>$2.2 billion of federal money, already allocated to South Carolina, would be released and put to this use.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Billons of dollars in growth in the health care industry<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>More people willing to work as their health conditions occur<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Healthcare costs would be lowered for all residents, even those who are already insured<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Tremendous savings in insurance from the ability to pursue preventative healthcare<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em><strong>ADDITIONAL LIVES WILL BE SAVED!<\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!-- \/divi:list --><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=&#8221;1_2&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.16&#8243; custom_padding=&#8221;|||&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; custom_padding__hover=&#8221;|||&#8221;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.24.0&#8243; background_size=&#8221;initial&#8221; background_position=&#8221;top_left&#8221; background_repeat=&#8221;repeat&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h3>Why hasn\u2019t South Carolina adopted this?<\/h3>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.24.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; text_font_size=&#8221;16px&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>Gov. Henry McMaster says: \u201cThe way to good health is good employment, good education.\u201d <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/general-news-6b28e1020fbb62a62290b5c0c9085c90\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AP News<\/a>)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This is ironic given the constant assault on our public education system.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.24.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; text_font_size=&#8221;16px&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>The other common objection is that the short-term gain would get obliterated by long-term losses as the federal help disappears.<\/p>\n<p>But here&#8217;s a fact we just cannot get around: <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The money has already been taken from South Carolina and is sitting there doing nothing.<\/span> At a very minimum, get this money back by accepting the expansion. Then as the state&#8217;s coffers boom and the health of the general population improves, then we can reassess after the two year program.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=&#8221;1_2,1_2&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.24.0&#8243; background_size=&#8221;initial&#8221; background_position=&#8221;top_left&#8221; background_repeat=&#8221;repeat&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;1_2&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.16&#8243; custom_padding=&#8221;|||&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; custom_padding__hover=&#8221;|||&#8221;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.24.0&#8243; background_size=&#8221;initial&#8221; background_position=&#8221;top_left&#8221; background_repeat=&#8221;repeat&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h4>Results Matter!<\/h4>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.24.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ve already seen how this has played out in many states across the nation.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.24.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Medicaid expansion was associated with a 4.4 percent to 4.7 percent <strong>reduction in state spending<\/strong> on traditional Medicaid. Estimates of savings outside of the Medicaid program vary significantly. Savings on mental health care, in the corrections system, and from reductions in uncompensated care range from 14 percent of the cost of expansion in Kentucky to 30 percent in Arkansas.<\/p>\n<p><cite role=\"textbox\" aria-multiline=\"true\" aria-label=\"Quote citation\" aria-readonly=\"false\" class=\"block-editor-rich-text__editable wp-block-quote__citation rich-text\" contenteditable=\"true\" data-wp-block-attribute-key=\"citation\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commonwealthfund.org\/publications\/issue-briefs\/2020\/may\/impact-medicaid-expansion-states-budgets\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Commonwealth Fund, 2020<\/a><\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=&#8221;1_2&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.16&#8243; custom_padding=&#8221;|||&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; custom_padding__hover=&#8221;|||&#8221;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.24.0&#8243; text_font=&#8221;||||||||&#8221; text_text_color=&#8221;#000000&#8243; text_font_size=&#8221;16px&#8221; header_font=&#8221;||||||||&#8221; header_text_color=&#8221;#E09900&#8243; header_font_size=&#8221;13px&#8221; custom_padding=&#8221;0px|0px|0px|0px|false|false&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h4>My Position<\/h4>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.24.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; text_text_color=&#8221;#FFFFFF&#8221; text_font_size=&#8221;18px&#8221; background_color=&#8221;#12876F&#8221; custom_padding=&#8221;15px|15px|15px|15px|false|false&#8221; box_shadow_style=&#8221;preset6&#8243; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>The facts and evidence are clear.
